Body, survival, art history

The history of art has represented the female body for centuries: it idealized it, undressed it, turned it into allegory. But it rarely let it scar. This series inserts breast cancer survivors into canonical works — portraits, allegories, mythological scenes — to inscribe within the visual tradition a body it had always excluded.

Each image is at once homage and amendment. The scar, the mastectomy, the mark of treatment are not concealed: they occupy the center of compositions that demanded, for centuries, an intact skin. The gesture is political and intimate at once. A way of saying: this body, too, belongs to the image.
